PC2 — Scoping Review

PC2 is due Wednesday, 2/5 at noon.

Now that you have pitched your ideas, it is important to refine your projects and setup a plan for the rest of the semester. Determining what features you will implement and thinking through the implementation details is a part of the scoping process.

You will work with your group of up to 8 members to create a slide deck that consists of a presentation no longer than five minutes.

Specification

Your goal is to further develop your project idea so that you have a feature set that can be implemented over the course of the semester. With your group, come up with a set of competencies that you want to implement and present the details of these competencies. Each competency should, at a minimum, include transitions, slots, sample utterances, sample responses, and details on any backend interactions needed to service the competency.

The scoping review is a review of the problem, a description of the solution, showcasing thoughtul reflection on what can be completed over the source of the semester and how it will be done. You will create a slide deck that describes all of these, and you will deliver a 5 minute presentation in class.

Resources

You can use this template slide deck as a starting point. You don't have to follow it exactly. Feel free to explain your project however you think is best.

Commentary

You should have received feedback from the course staff on your project pitches, and should take into account any suggestions given. This pitch does not have to be given by all members of your team--one oft-forgotten challenge is time management. With only 5 minutes to make your case, does it make sense to delegate a subset of your team to give the presentation instead of everyone? You can work with course staff to evaluate how feasible your ideas are and work on refining your comeptencies.

Hints

Remember, this is a semester long course. Do not try to solve all of the world's problems but also do not aim too low. We will expect you to have put some thought into what can be done over the course of the semester. You do not need to scrap features that you think may not be acheivable this year. Keep them as reach goals. It is better to have 3-4 competencies that are well defined and scoped out rather than 5+ incomplete competencies. We are looking for quality and thoughtfulness.

Previous groups have used Google Slides to produce slide decks. You are welcome to do so, so long as you turn in a PDF version of the slides.

You are given a great deal of leeway in constructing your presentation. Don't feel constrained by the template slide deck!

Here are some example scoping reviews from last semester.
